..it was love at first sight!

These gorgeous crochet bucket shoulder bags are simply called mochilas and were traditionally used by the native Wayuu to carry food and water. Although beautiful, because they are made with thick cotton threads, they are extremely functional and durable.

The Wayuu are an Amerindian ethnic group living in the La Guajira Peninsula in northern Columbia and northwest Venezuela.

Mochilas are made by hand using a complex hand-weaving process which is passed down from mother to daughter for generations.  Each bag, a work of art and totally unique, can take up to 20 days to make. Some will even be made by a single thread.  While women often focus on making the bags, the men assist by making the equally difficult shoulder straps.

The colors and patterns found in each bag are reflections of the picturesque sea, clear sky, wind and dunes characterize the region inhabited by the indigenous Wayuu.

Spiritual Boho is proud to help support community development in Wayuu villages throughout Colombia and provide these once disadvantaged artisans with work and economic stability.
